The development of integrated environments forcomputer-assisted software engineering (CASE) has provenmore difficult than expected. The ESPRIT project DAIDA(Advanced Interactive Development of Data-IntensiveApplications) has produced the first prototype of acomprehensive systems environment which manages the wholeprocess of information systems development and maintenanceas a multi-layered knowledgebase with semi-automaticmapping between the layers.Several DAIDA results have had substantial impact on systemsdevelopment theory and practice: the language Telos and itsusage in the ConceptBase system for modeling knowledge aboutinformation systems, the modular database programminglanguage DBPL as a theoretical foundation for futureobject-oriented databases, the integration ofknowledge-based analysis and mapping assistants fromrequirements capture to running code, and a CAD metamodel ofinformation systems processes including support forconfiguration management and teamwork. The example of apersonnel information system is used throughout the book toillustrate the relationships between the differentlanguages, methods, and tools.The book has three main parts, covering "upper CASE"(requirements analysis and its mapping to initial designs),"lower CASE" (transformation of designs into efficientdatabase programs), and process management. In addition todirect DAIDA results, the book contains contributions fromcollaborating national and North American projects. Theintended audience for the book are practitioners,researchers, and graduate students with an interest in CASEintegration for data-intensive information systems.
